"To educate girls is to reduce poverty. Study after study has taught us that there is no tool for development more effective than the education of girls.”
Kofi Annan, former U.N. Secretary General
Targeting girls from economic hardship areas, or girls facing adverse
circumstances, the Ambassadors Girls' Scholarship Program (AGSP) is
providing scholarships to girls attending primary and secondary school
in Africa. The Academy for Educational Development is delivering over 85,000
scholarships over a period of four years in 15 Western, Central and Eastern
African countries. Reaching beyond school fees and
uniforms, the AGSP combines cross-cutting themes such as mentoring,
HIV/AIDS
awareness education,and community
participation activities in the scholarship package to
promote not only a higher level of girls' enrollment in
school, but a higher level of retention of these girls in school and
better achievement.
The AGSP is a key component of President
Bush's Africa
Education Initiative (AEI), which aims to address the
millions of school-aged children in Africa who do not attend school -
60%
of whom are girls.
The AGSP Region II countries, which include Burundi,
Cameroon,
Chad,
Democratic
Republic of Congo, Djibouti,
Equatorial
Guinea, Eritrea,
Ethiopia,
Kenya,
Niger,
Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania,
and Uganda
are managed by the Academy
for Educational
Development (AED) through the
Center
for Gender Equity, and funded by
the United States Agency
for International Development (USAID).
